After meeting with Dr. Lai, the research doctor, we got some clarification regarding the clinical trial/ CART-38 cells.
After George completes this current round of chemotherapy, he will undergo a bone marrow biopsy (the week of Sept 12). If he has less than 5% blasts, then he will be eligible to go directly to transplant, probably at the end of September. If he has no response or the blasts are greater than 5%, then the plan will be to use CART-38 as a bridge to transplant. Another method of trying to get the leukemia into remission.
Dr. Lai said the CART-38 will be like a back-up plan if this round of chemo doesn’t get George into remission. This is different from what Dr. Loren had told us, or maybe we just didn’t understand. Very possible! But this is the latest. We are optimistic that this round will get George into remission because the last round got him from 26% blasts down to 8%. Of course, as Dr. Loren said, his leukemia is a stubborn, crafty disease and if it starts to recognize a certain chemo drug, it can adapt and work around it. Absolutely insidious!
Again, thank you for your support and encouragement for George. It is so appreciated.
